EMMA — Licence

Plain English, because you should be able to read what you bought.

1. What you’re buying

A perpetual licence to use EMMA 1.x — every version numbered 1.something, including every update we release in that line.

One purchase. No subscription. No account. No renewal.

You may install and use EMMA on any device you own, and it may be used by you and the people in your household. That includes the family features: EMMA is designed to be a household’s companion, and we’re not going to charge per person at your kitchen table.

You may not resell, rent, sublicense, or redistribute EMMA or your licence key.

2. It keeps working. That’s the point.

Your licence is verified entirely on your own machine, offline, with no activation server and nothing sent to us. That isn’t a policy we could quietly change — it’s how the software is built. There is no mechanism by which we can switch off, expire, degrade, or reach into an EMMA you have already installed.

If we vanish tomorrow, your EMMA keeps working.

3. Your data is yours

Your conversations, memories and files stay on your machine. We don’t receive them, and there’s no telemetry.

Nothing reaches the internet unless you turn it on. Everything that can, in full:

• Live mode — lets EMMA search the web and read pages when you ask her to, and it is what gives her the browser tools. Off by default, and asked about during first-run setup.
• Update checks — one anonymous request to see if a newer version exists. Nothing about you is sent. Off by default, and asked about during first-run setup. Pressing Update afterwards downloads that installer and starts it — she never does it on her own.
• Voices, and recognising who is speaking — choosing a spoken voice downloads it, and voice recognition needs a one-time model download. Neither happens until you ask for it, and the size is shown first.
• Your email, if you connect it — EMMA speaks to your mail server directly from your machine. Two separate switches, both off, and sending is separate from reading.
• A different model engine, if you configure one — EMMA ships with a local engine and uses it by default; pointing her at another is yours to do.

In every one of those cases the connection is between your machine and a service you chose. It never comes to us — there is no server of ours that your EMMA talks to, and we receive nothing either way.

Soul File export always works — including during the trial, and including after a trial has expired. You can take your entire brain out at any time. We never hold your data hostage to a payment.

4. The trial

60 days, fully featured. When it ends, EMMA becomes read-only: she’ll still talk to you and your export still works, but she won’t act on your machine until you buy a licence.

Nothing is ever deleted when a trial expires. If you buy six months later, everything she remembered is still there.

5. Updates, and what happens if EMMA 2 ever exists

Updates to EMMA 1.x are included, free, for as long as we publish them.

Security fixes are guaranteed for a minimum of 2 years from the date EMMA 2 is released — and in practice for as long as we reasonably can. If EMMA 2 never ships, security fixes simply continue.

If we ever release EMMA 2 as a major new version:

• EMMA 1.x remains yours, forever, exactly as it is. No nag screens, no removed features, no “upgrade to continue”. See §2 — we couldn’t do this even if we wanted to.
• EMMA 2 would be a separate purchase, at roughly half price for existing owners.
• If you bought EMMA within 12 months before EMMA 2 is released, you get EMMA 2 free. Nobody who bought recently pays twice.

We’re telling you this before you buy rather than after, because finding out later is how people get the feeling we built this product to avoid.

6. Refunds

14 days, no questions asked. Email loosekeyz84@proton.me and we’ll refund you. You don’t have to justify it and we won’t try to talk you out of it.

This is in addition to your statutory rights as a consumer, which nothing in this licence takes away.

7. What we don’t promise

EMMA thinks using a local AI model running on your hardware. The quality of what she says depends on that model and that hardware, and language models get things wrong. She is not a substitute for professional advice — medical, legal, financial or otherwise. Check anything that matters.

EMMA can act on your computer when you let her (run commands, edit files). The confirmation dial, permission scopes, undo and the audit log exist so that stays under your control — but you are responsible for what you ask her to do, and for keeping your own backups.

Except where the law doesn’t allow it to be limited — including death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, and your consumer rights — the software is provided “as is”, and our total liability is limited to what you paid for your licence.

8. Losing your key

Email loosekeyz84@proton.me from the address you bought with and we’ll resend it. Your key is tied to that email, not to a machine, so reinstalling or moving to a new computer needs nothing from us.

9. Ending the licence

Your licence lasts forever. It ends only if you break §1 — reselling or redistributing it — and even then, your data remains yours to export.

10. Law

This licence is governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts there have jurisdiction. If you’re a consumer elsewhere, this doesn’t remove protections you have where you live.
